The burial of pets is a custom which has been established in Europe for hundreds of years. Our pet cemetery is named after Wassenaar, a seaside town in Holland where we first noticed a hundred year old pet cemetery and we first became aware such formally designated places even existed. Our pet cemetery is on the banks of a small lake (Lake Houhaw) and one interpretation of Wassenaar is appropriately: near water. Pet burial is a tradition which allows gentle closure to those left behind. A pet cemetery is a place of rest for your loving companion. It is a place to visit and remember. Location: Within Greater Hamilton, an hour’s drive West of Toronto. Since 1996, one acre of our 178-acre property has been zoned permanently and exclusively for use as a pet cemetery. The scenic rolling lands are also home to a tree farm, a private elementary school, a nature preserve and family residence. Directions Fees: Dogs: $395. (+ GST)* Cats/small animals: $275. (+ GST) * There is a surcharge for pets weighing over 75 lbs. Included is a grave marker, with your choice of text. Most pets are buried wrapped in a towel or their favourite blanket. There is a charge for casket burial, depending on casket size. There are no other fees, nor annual maintenance charges. Visits: Come back to visit your faithful companion’s resting place at any time. There are mature trees, walking trails and a long foot bridge across a pond. It is private and peaceful. Reservations: A $50. deposit will reserve an adjacent plot for eventual side-by-side burial of another pet in your family. Services: Weather permitting, same-day service is often feasible, including during the winter months. Casket burial and pick-up are both available at extra cost.
